The South Whidbey
Youth Connection provides the financial resources for the
Tutor/Mentor Program at Langley Middle School. The school
employs a coordinator who recruits and matches community volunteers with
students who would benefit from additional academic and/or relationship
support. Program volunteers provide support in multiple settings,
including one-on-one sessions weekly or more frequently, math tutoring in
math classes and "Homework Club" (after-school drop-in program in which
volunteer mentors and staff support students with projects, studying, or
homework). Training and technical assistance in English Language Learning
(ELL) is provided to tutors and mentors.
The goal of the Tutor/Mentor Program is to provide necessary learning and
emotional supports to youth in individual and group settings in order to
help youth thrive academically and personally. The Tutor/Mentor Program has
been serving students for the past eight years.
