Youth Leadership Council

Diana Shirley,

YLC Manager (Chalk & Mask Artist)

On March 14th The Youth Leadership Council collaborated with Our House Two in putting on an all ages concert at Bayview Hall.  The event was well attended and featured three local youth bands, Chicago Typewriter, Erabe and The Vixons as well as Lake from Olympia.  Plans are now being firmed up for a dance at Bayview’s front room, this time featuring all local talent, Chicago Typewriter, Pherabe and DJ  Ahren.  It has been great to watch these students organize and take the initiative to book the musicians, make flyers and promote these events.  They are also gathering art in the form of drawings, poetry, recipes and photography for the next edition of their teen magazine, The Edge.  Gabe Adams, a YLC member has even initiated a contest for submissions.  Look for this next edition in late May at Island Coffeehouse and Books and The Hub.

It has been a pleasure to work with these talented young people.

The HUB

Frankie Petitclerc,

Hub Program Manager (Fun & Food Artist)

This spring we’ve had some new and fun activities at the Hub and we’ve got some great adventures coming up this July and August for our Hub Summer Program which will be for youth entering sixth-ninth grades.

In March we acquired a Nintendo interactive video game called Guitar Hero.  It’s a game where kids can play along to their favorite rock songs and feel like a rock star.  It has various speeds and skill levels and it really gets the teens focused and developing their dexterity and of course they have a fun time doing it.  The kids compete with each other but they also root for each other, a camaraderie evolves between them and friendships develop that might not otherwise happen.

For March’s Early Release Day, we went bowling at Freeland Lanes again.  One boy didn’t want to go after he realized his friends weren’t going.  He said, “I suck at bowling.”  He wound up getting the highest scores, which he was really excited about. And he made some new friends on top of it. Thanks again to Rodger, Nancy and the other staff at Freeland Lanes for their great rates and kindness. They really care about the kids and are very family and community oriented.

On April’s Early Release Day, we had a treasure hunt in Langley.  Three teams of kids ran from one clue to the next and literally worked up a sweat.  A couple of them even had to pour cold water over their heads to cool off when they returned to the Hub.  It’s probably the most exercise they had in awhile.  The winning team received a couple of prizes, including gift certificates to the Clyde Theatre.  Thank you Lynn & Blake Willeford for your generous donations and continued support.

This summer we’ve got some great activities planned for our Hub Summer Program which will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from July15 through August 14 for youth entering sixth – ninth grades, with registrations through Parks & Rec Please check out the colored insert with the activity descriptions and all the details.

Finally, thanks to Bruce Alexander for your loving presence with youth in the Hub each week!
