Summer Fun!

Summer Art Issue!

From the (Artsy) Executive Director

Collaboration is the name of the game and the board of directors and staff of South Whidbey Youth Connection have been busy seeking avenues to cooperate with other youth-serving organizations to provide a wide array of drug- and violence-free activities for middle and high school-aged youth.  You’ll notice the colored insert in this newsletter that highlights our collaboration with South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District and South Whidbey Commons.  We joined forces to showcase the number of activities youth can participate in this summer.

Operating summer programs comes with the cost.  That’s why we need to charge for our programs.  In the spirit of community, we don’t want to turn anyone away who cannot afford the fees and would like to offer scholarships.  That’s where you come into our collaboration For a donation of $176 you can sponsor a middle school student for all SWYC’s summer programs Or look over our listings and decide which program(s) you’d like to sponsor.  Then use the coupon on page three of this newsletter and the handy self-addressed envelope and mail your donation to us.  And for those of you who would like to participate but think you can’t afford the fees, contact Frankie at 221-3230 and ask about our scholarships.  Because of funding from Community Mobilization for Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention we are able to provide a free lunch each day of our summer program.

At a recent board of directors retreat, we all agreed that cooperation and collaboration with other organizations is the way to go.  I’m excited about the prospects and will be reporting back to you about our progress in future newsletters.

With this newsletter we’re saying good-bye to our administrative assistant Chris Highland.  Chris has been invaluable in redesigning our website (check out www.swyouth.com), jazzing up the look of our newsletter, starting a photography class for youth and just being a good guy.  Chris is moving back to California to be closer to his fiancée and teach at a university.  Thanks, Chris!
