Connections
Spring 2008
From the Executive Director
Once
again, you, the residents of South Whidbey, have outdone yourselves in
supporting the South Whidbey Youth Connection.
You generously responded
to our holiday
newsletter
with $9,500 in donations and 250 of you turned out for our annual
Salmon Dinner
the last week in January. Your ongoing support helps us continue our
stellar programs aimed at keeping our teens drug and violence free.
Our
special thanks go to
Dave and Karen Anderson
who caught and cooked the salmon for our dinner;
The Braeburn
for donating buckets of coleslaw;
Neil’s Clover Patch Café
for baking hundreds of potatoes;
Mukilteo Coffee Company
for their tasty coffees;
Langley United Methodist Church
for the use of Fellowship Hall and the wonderful desserts prepared by their
congregation; the youth from The Hub, supervised by
Frankie Petitclerc,
who helped serve and clean up;
Gloria Brennan
and
Talia Marcus
for providing music;
Channing Gredvig
and
Gail Pierce
from the SWYC board of directors for organizing the event, and the
SWYC board members and their spouses
who helped set up, cook, serve and wash dishes.
On
Friday, March 21st,
the
Island County Drug Action Team
will be hosting their annual breakfast at
Whidbey General Hospital
to discuss the state of drug abuse in Island County. County, state and
federal law enforcement officials and professionals from the recovery and
treatment field will be making presentations. Business owners, service
providers, parents and interested citizens are invited to this free event.
Call Chris at 221-4121 for more information.
This
year the South Whidbey Youth Connection is collaborating with South Whidbey
Commons/LACEP and South Whidbey Parks and Recreation to offer an exciting
array of
summer classes,
events
and
field trips.
There will be one brochure and registration form to fill out, distributed by
Parks & Rec. SWYC will run programs for middle school-aged youth for five
weeks beginning July 15th.
We’ve already made reservations to take a group of youth
camping
in Deception Pass State Park the week of August 3rd.
Watch your mail for more details.
Another
popular event that’s returning this summer is our
8th
Annual Benefit Art Show
held during Choochokam, July 11-13, in Fellowship Hall of Langley United
Methodist Church. As in past years, local artists are invited to display
and sell up to five pieces of their work. Generally, we split the proceeds
of the sales 50-50 with the artists. If you’re an artist who would like to
participate, or someone who would like to volunteer, call Susie Barnett at
331-5546.
Please
feel free to contact me at 221-4142 or duane@swyouth.com with your
questions, comments or concerns.
