In March 2008
Michael Stadler and Chris Highland created a FREE weekly educational and
inspirational group for youth to celebrate their "eye for images." The
group meets inside and outside in these easy and accessible interactive
sessions. Participants use cameras provided by instructors or bring
their own and everyone is encouraged to write expressively about any images
they photograph. We meet every Wednesday at 3pm in "The South Whidbey Commons"-the room behind
Island Coffeehouse and Bookstore in Langley. The program is a new
outreach of the South
Whidbey Youth Connection.

Michael is the owner of
Michael Stadler
Studio at Ken's Corner in Clinton. He is a "graduate" of
Youth Connection programs having been a participant in the Hub after school
activities and serving on the board of directors. His work is
well-known on Whidbey and beyond especially through his school portraits,
cards and popular photographic creations. Michael is passionate about
his work with images, particularly enjoying the "montage" format, blending
photos into thoughtful and whimsical creations that draw the viewer into a
vision of delight and wonder. Michael finds time in his busy schedule
to travel to the far rounded corners of the earth to grab bagfuls of new
photographs. Every July he contributes his work to the annual
Art Show
and Sale (at Langley United Methodist Church) that benefits the South
Whidbey Youth Connection.
Chris is the author of six Nature
meditation books that include wisdom and images from his long experience
sloshing around in the natural world from Seattle to San Francisco to
Scotland. His first photography exhibit was shown at Bayview Corner in March
and April 2008 (www.naturetemple.net). Chris is especially interested in drawing the attention of youth to their own
eye (soul) and wants to encourage participants to reflect and write about
the photographic experiences each week inside and outside the "class."
Chris has been administrative assistant at the Youth Connection since 2007.
Cameras, paper, pens and a computer are provided
for FREE use each week.
We've already been invited to
submit our work to
The South Whidbey Record on a regular basis
and the
Youth Leadership Council has asked us to give submissions to
The Edge
magazine. We will be participating in the annual
Youth in Arts events in April through
the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts.
Youth of later middle school or high school age
are especially welcome to join us. For more questions or comments you
can reach the Youth Connection at 221-4142 or
info@swyouth.com or Michael at
michael@stadler.com.
