October 2007
Youth Leadership Council
Diana Shirley, YLC Manager
While calling on some of last year’s Youth Council members to set up an
initial meeting, I was surprised to discover that they were, at that
moment, holding a meeting they had called themselves! This group really is
independent and motivated! At the meeting I attended the following week, I
learned that the main interest of the current
Youth Council participants is to “provide teens with fun events free of
alcohol and drugs.” One member said, “I love putting on concerts and other
activities for fellow teens in the community.” Stay tuned for upcoming
concerts, a possible outdoor movie night and/or game day as well as their
teen magazine,
The Edge
which has its own
unique style and is also produced by this enterprising group. We welcome
new members, so if you’re a high school student interested in joining
please contact me at Diana@swyouth.com or 221-3230.
The HUB
Frankie Petitclerc, Hub Program Manager
It’s a new school year at the Hub with some fun activities coming up this
year. First I want to fill you in on what we did during our summer
program. We were open to youth going into grades 6-9 and had some really
fun activities and field trips. We had Tournament Day and Ice Cream Sundae
Day at the Hub and started work on our entry for the Soup Box Derby in
September. Thank you to South Whidbey Soroptomists and Bob Dalton for their
sponsorships and support, John Tabbal for all the personal time and
mechanical work and Wayne Ferguson for mechanical support. We also went on a
number of field trips such as swimming at Oak Harbor Pool, bowling at
Freeland Lanes, a barbeque at Maxwelton Beach, a trip to WildWaves and two
nights of camping at Deception Pass. The kids really had a great time and
enjoyed being able to go on some trips outside of South Whidbey. A special
thank you to volunteers Kinzie Furman, Aaron Helvey and Bruce Alexander for
all their help, support and patience. The summer program wouldn’t have
happened without you.
This
school year we are again open every school day from 2-5:30 p.m. and on early
release days from 11-3 p.m. We will be serving middle school youth on
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and high school youth on
Wednesdays. We provide a free daily hot snack and our weekly schedule
will include free art and music workshops, and movies on Fridays. On
early release days we will have special activities and field trips. On
October 27,
the Hub, in conjunction with South Whidbey Parks & Rec., will be hosting a
Halloween costume dance for middle school youth from 6-9 p.m. at the Deer
Lagoon Grange in Langley. There will be a D.J. playing the latest tunes and
prizes will be given out for best costumes. Parental permission is
required.
For
more information on these and other activities or if you would like to
volunteer at the Hub, please contact Frankie at 221-3230 or check our
website at www.swyouth.com.
